Losing Weight to Help With Dancing - But Dancing Isn't Helping

I have needed to lose weight (legitimately, I have spoken with a doctor) for a while now. I gained weight rapidly during an illness (long story) and I am motivated to lose it to help with my dancing. However, Irish dance is not helping me lose weight at all. I do lose weight if I do other workouts, but not dance. I am struggling to juggle workouts and dance. Has anybody else had this problem? If you have any advice, that would be great. Thanks so much!

I'm sorry, I can't really help, as I have exactly the opposite problem- if I lose another OUNCE I'll be banned from dancing, or at least that's what it feels like!

But keep it up! Eat a lot of fruit - I've heard that helps. :) You'll get there!

I have the same problem.... I so urgently need to loos weight as I am like tons to heavy for my height, but obviously dancing dosnt help me (even if I go to training 3-4 time per week, every week) This is so not fair and I do not understand how it is possible that we do such a hard workout (and that it is) but it seems to do nothing for loosing weight. Any ideas would be most appriciated :)

Dancing is aerobic exercise, so it doesn't help you lose weight, that much. In fact, I'd guess a one hour class only burns about 450 calories, tops! So the only people it impacts are people like me, who can't spare any calories... Just now remembered that!

I've been told I have lost weight, and dancing is my main activity. But I will also say that dancing has done more to tone my body as opposed to losing lots of weight. It will definitely keep you fit, so I wouldn't stop.

Thanks... and it's nice to know I'm not the only one, Eva!

There's a book I read called 'Thrive'. It's about vegan sports nutrition, and while I don't know if you're vegan/vegetarian, it has a lot of useful information about healthy sources of energy. It's helped me quite a bit, and I think you might find it useful. :) Just a thought.

Wow, cool, you already read that book? I just ordered it for my husband and I'm pretty curious about it, too :)

A vegan diet seems to have become quite popular in fitness, running and bodybuilding communities, so it seems to have many more beneficial implications on one's health and fitness than I thought before ;)

Yeah, I read it ages ago and recently picked it up again. It's a great book! You'll love it. The author was recently interviewed for my local newspaper and now my mum's interested, too.

Cool thing! Sounds like a great 'investment' ;) Really curious now. Maybe we can get even more people interested in a vegan diet. Ha, I'm quite enthusiastic right now! Thanks for letting me know!

It may sound obvious, but eat only when you FEEL hungry, not because it's time to eat. Don't overeat yourself, so eat slowly and finish eating the first time you feel full.Don't eat 3 or 4 hours before you go to sleep. Try to drink more and eat less.Put on an extra t-shirt when you are at dance class, so you sweat more. But please, be careful and considerate with all of this and don't starve yourself.
Quick comment on the extra t-shirt and sweating more. When you sweat, you're losing water weight. You may become dehydrated from it. You'd burn the same number of calories if you didn't wear the extra t-shirt. Do make sure you drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise. http://www.livestrong.com/article/236758-weight-loss-by-sweating/
Actually, I sweat the same without the extra t shirt as well :D But you're right, of course, it is true.
