About me

Hi, I'm Martha Maria. I record as MarMelodian. I'm a singer/songwriter and composer. My style is electric, progressive folk, with a dash of Celtic and Appalachian Mountain influences. I write and record songs, carols, hymns and instrumental music. My voice is a cross between Loreena McKennett, Kate Bush and Stevie Nicks. My high notes have been described as bell like and ethereal but my low notes are earthy and soulful. My lyrics are poetic and my melodies are hauntingly beautiful and memorable. What Irish things do I play, dance, say, sing or other:

I'm a mountain girl, from the Appalachian Mountains in East Tennessee, USA. The Appalachians were settled by Scottish, Irish and English pioneers. The people of the Appalachians were isolated by rugged terrain for and kept the old ways, the old music and stories. So my style is, which is progressive, electric folk has a distinctly Celtic sound, even though I am from the states.

How many years have you been playing/singing?

A lot. I started playing the piano by ear when I was four.

Favorite Music

I love it all. I've always had an awareness of being a musical spirit, even when I was tiny. I especially love all kinds of folk music, classical, overtone, old jazz, chant, hymns, Sacred Harp singing, you name it, if it's musical, I like it!....
