Profile Information

I am a ...
Dancer, Musician, Fan
About me
I'm crazy, but I think most people I know are. Besides, normality is overrated.

I love reading, writing, dance, music and computers. I've written a few novels; that's how I spend most of my time! But I also read ridiculously fast, I dance instead of walking and I practice my instruments ... when I get around to it. E.G, when my mum makes me. And I spend a lot of time on the computer.
What Irish things do I play, dance, say, sing or other:
I play:
- traditional fiddle and classical violin
- classical flute with a bit of trad thrown in
- piano
- tin whistle.

I also dance.
Music/Singing School/Group
Bexley Symphonic Wind Band, Bexley Youth Orchestra, Bexley Grammar School Concert Band, Bexley Grammar School Chamber Orchestra.
Music/Singing Level
[WORKING ON] Violin - Grade 7, Flute - Grade 7, Piano, Grade 2/3
How many years have you been playing/singing?
Violin -- 7 years. Flute -- 5 years. Piano -- 1 year.
Favorite Music
Uh, I dunno, I listen to quite a large variety. My playlist:
- Soundtracks: everything from Les Miserables to Pirates of the Caribbean, including Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Lord of the Dance, Riverdance and Feet of Flames
- Celtic stuff, Irish and whatnot. No particular bands because some of them I only really like one of their albums or whatever
- Rocky/emo stuff like My Chemical Romance
- Jazz / Miscellaneous like Sam's Piano.
- Christian music like Delirious?, Lifehouse and [dweeb]

And yeah. Lots of random stuff :)
Dancing School / Group
Courtney McMahon School of Irish Dance
Dancing Level
Primary/Intermediate
How many years have you been Irish dancing?
One
Favourite Irish Dance Show
That's probably got to be Lord of the Dance. Which I'm going to see in November! Hooray!
I love this about Irish Dancing:
It's really fun and everybody's really nice ... also, when I'm dancing, there's this terrific high!
I love this about Irish Tradition:
It's ... different. Everyone says it's weird but I really like it all. Well, except the wigs. And the majorly sparkly dresses. And the fake tan. But then, I guess that's not exactly traditional!

An Impossible Choice

Two weeks ago today, I made an impossible choice.

I want to become good at whatever I do, so I can't do everything. That much has always been clear to me. If I'm constantly torn between two types of dance or two activities, am I really going to be dedicating all my energy to them both? No - I'm going to become passably good at both, but not brilliant at either.

So I had to make a decision.

Two weeks ago today, I left Irish dancing.

I am no longer an Irish dancer.…

This Isn't My Irish Dance

I was in the public library on Tuesday, and I happened to be on the computer, looking at the library catalogue. Out of interest, I typed in 'Irish Dancing', and a book immediately showed up in the Junior Non-Fiction section called "Irish Dancing ... and other folk dances." So, intrigued, I found the book and settled down to read it.

I had hoped that it would tell me something I didn't know. And it did. It told me that a hop brought your foot up to near your hip, that hard shoes had a… Continue

Dancer

**I don't know if anyone has seen the AnaheimBallet channel on YouTube, but they're basically a ballet weekly podcast. I'm thinking of setting up an I-D version. If I had one of their 'dancer profiles', perhaps this is what I would say.**

Hi, I'm Miriam, and I dance with the Courtney McMahon School of Irish Dance. I don't compete much but I take classes three times a week, and practice regularly. I guess you could say it's become a habit, but I can't…

My first time with the books was when I was about 10 or 11, just before the first film came out. Music is indeed fabulous, really fits the story. I hope it's gonna be that good in the Hobbit film :)

Yep, Lord of the Rings is my favourite story of all time :D (I love the books and really enjoyed the movies)

How about you?

Hi, Miriam.  Thank you for your sweet comment.  We're so glad you like your t-shirt and that it could sort of be an early birthday present.  Do you have any special b-day plans?  Also, we're glad your laptop now sports a Diddlyi sticker.  I must admit that my laptop has two on it!  We had this very talented Irish artist create the 8-hand reel image for us a few years ago and I just love it.

And just out of curiosity... what's the thinking behind everyone wearing black to dance class?  Is it just so that everyone is uniform or is there more to it?  Hope you have a great weekend!  Rebecca :)
