End-of-feis-year Thoughts

(First off, wow, that was an interesting reaction to my previous journal post... XD)

I have been dancing for just over a year now. And as of the end of my fourth feis last weekend, I have three dances in Novice (reel and light and single jigs), one dance in Beginner Two (slip jig), one dance in Beginner One (treble jig), and two still left to learn (hornpipe and trad set).

On the one hand, that's apparently amazing, as far as dancers from my dance school are…

World Qualifier

So after 15 years of on and off dancing I have QUALIFIED FOR WORLDS! I have always done very well at the ECRO and Nans, and although I have been close many times I have never qualified for worlds. FINALLY! Hard work does pay off.

My first 2 rounds were okay, although some how the girl who I danced with and I collided…

Is Irish Dance Dated?

Check out this clip of an Irish dance group, Boiz in Motion, on Holland's Got Talent.  After the performance, the first judge said the following to the boys,"You have taken what I consider a dance style a little dated and completely revitalized it."  This comment bothered us.  Do you think Irish dancing is dated?  Or is that the… Continue

Final Decision time...?

Moving to and-overs from adult category:

Pros:

-more competitive

-ability to participate in all competitions

-become a true competitive dancer

-learn more complicated steps

-harder exercise (good for me!)

-can get a solo dress

-potentially judged on athleticism more (good for me also)

-ability to become champ!

Cons:

-parents of younger dancers may not like…

Help Me, Aria, Meagan, and Megan Go To Ireland in 2013!!

My friends Aria, Meagan, and Megan, and myself have a goal: to raise enough money to go to Ireland for the University of Limerick's Blas Summer School in 2013!

This is not going to be easy for us. Each of us has to raise over three thousand dollars in the next two years, to cover the plane fares, the tuition at Blas, and other costs.

But we're determined to do it, and do it we will. However, we can't do it alone.

Will you help…

Share Your Story: How & Why Did You Start Irish Dancing?

Every once in a while, a Diddlyi member posts their story of how and why they started Irish dancing and we just love reading them.  We have dancers from all over the world here as part of this rich community, so we thought we'd start a big ol' discussion where everyone can share their Irish dancing story.  Be as brief…

Ireland/What inspired me to ID

Ireland.. To many, the word conjures up images of green fields, leprechauns, and a mysterious land full of magic. To me, this word means just one thing. Home.. I was amazed at how at ease I felt with family I had not seen in what felt like forever. How natural it felt to walk around Cork city, mingling with the locals. How great the feeling of belonging is. The land is just so bewitchingly beautiful, it just seems to whisper to me and makes me want to start dancing a jig right there in the yard… Continue

I Will Never Give Up

Right now, I'm looking at a picture. Me, smiling, with a trophy in my hands.

It doesn't show that it's a second place trophy, nor that there were just two competitors in that competition.

Effectively, I placed last in that competition. It's the same for the other two First Feis dances I was in- last. I likely placed last in the other dance I did, as well- I forgot the second step, messed up the other dancer, and got a 60, while the winner's score was…

I Know It's a Cliche, But...

So I had a feis yesterday. I was sure I had nailed every dance. But the judge that I had for my reel, light jig, treble jig, and hornpipe always looked as if she had swallowed something sour. The only dance I actually medaled in was my slip jig, in which I got a 4th from a different judge. That was actually amazing considering the fact that I collided with the girl I danced with!

For a bit, I felt awful. My goal had been to win my solo dress. I wanted to sulk around the house for the…
