Diddlyi Irish Dance and Music

Do people actually look up to Michael Flately?

Michael Flatley began strong, but he took it waaaaay to far when he began tap dancing on his shows; this gave people wrong impressions.

Credit where it's due though! He knew his history and he respected his people!

I'm in two minds about Flately, he's done wonders for irish dancing but also has done a bit of a diservice as well. People now assume irish dancing is more tap dancing and to be honest I think traditional irish dancing is much more intense than his various shows demonstrate. I've had girls join my class and leave again as I teach traditional steps before any display work and they were expecting to learn riverdance stuff as that's what they've seen on tv.

So yes it's made people more aware of irish dancing but not necessarily in the best context. As a man I'm not fussed on him at all, he's a bit up his own backside! He's got a huge ego and I find him very OTT. But that's my opinion, I can't abide people like that, he's a bit of a stereotype though.

I love what Michael Flately has done for Irish dance, making it so approachable to so many people. If it wasn't for Lord of the Dance, I might never have learned about traditional Irish dancing and music. I think he is a very good role model for young boys and girls as he promotes hard work and excellency that lead to great success.
However, I do think his "artistic" senses are a bit old fashioned and plain. In my opinion, his choreographies are mere average...

But all in all I think he has done great work over the years promoting Irish dance!

I resecpt Michael Flatley because of the amazing career he has. He started dancing at age 11! Very old to start! I started at 10. He doesnt tap dance, he irish dance moves.

i respect him as a performer and he's obviously ground breaking. sometimes i think he's sort of become a caricature of himself.
