Diddlyi Irish Dance and Music

Check out this clip of an Irish dance group, Boiz in Motion, on Holland's Got Talent.  After the performance, the first judge said the following to the boys,"You have taken what I consider a dance style a little dated and completely revitalized it."  This comment bothered us.  Do you think Irish dancing is dated?  Or is that the point?

If Irish dance is dated, then so is ballet. I'd say it's more of a timeless type of dance and is constantly evolving.

They look great... but on the other hand, they're not doing anything special at all... so if the guy thought what THEY are doing is "revitalized", you've got it- Irish dancing is not dated... just different from hip hop, that's it.

I always got the looks from people when I said I'm Irish dancer, I guess they expect something in a shape of "Olive Hurley's Anniversary of World Irish Dancing Championships", early(?) 90s video. We've gone a long way from there, and I am the example- I'm Polish doing Irish dancing, quite decently :)

The music is called Bridge Attack, and is composed by Bill Whelan.  It is on his "Roots of Riverdance" CD, it is not a piece from the Riverdance show.

great dancers.  isn't irish dancing dated by nature?  and there's nothing wrong with that.

I don't think Irish dance is dated at all!! There are sooooo many things that we do now that nobody did "way back when". My dance teachers said that as dancers they never had toe walks, those are new, and the steps, dresses, and shoes and so much more advanced and crazy.

However, that being sad, I think that the dance in this video is dated and not amazingly creative. So that was partly their fault.

haha ... they didn't do anything innovative at all.. except for a man doing toe stands as someone pointed out. different style costumes aren't really innovative. what a weird comment for the judge to make. if irish dance is "dated" than i suppose so is ballet, tap and jazz? LOL how silly

I think the tune is from Riverdance (!)

I guess that's why I was confused by his statement. They aren't doing anything too far removed from Riverdance (pretty sure the music is from one of the shows, anyone know?) besides the one guy doing toe stands and a more modern outfit. They're definitely great dancers, but I wouldn't say the routine is too far removed from the "dated" Riverdance style.

It's kind of normal for the judges to say things like that and at the same time to be impressed with this Riverdance-ish performance, because in Mainland Europe they are still not that "educated" in Irish Dancing - most of the times people outside the Irish Dancing world here don't know anything else except for LOTD and Riverdance - which were originally danced so many years ago, thus the "dated" statement.
